Do you want to envision the Jewish community you want to live in and build it?

Machar is a Jewish leadership program that builds community among Jewish young adults - those in their 20s and 30s, who are post-college and pre-kids - by serving as an incubator for young Jewish leaders and their ideas. Machar gives young adults the tools and seed money to imagine and create programming that will engage their peers in something Jewish.

Machar has three critical components. Machar participants: develop Jewish literacy by taking Melton classes, learn leadership skills, and, build a program, event, or project to engage their peers.

Examples of Machar projects include: a presentation from an American Jewish World Service alumna, establishing a Portland chapter of Mosaic, a national Jewish hiking group, a Succot-on-the-Park Blocks event that combined Jewish outreach with education on hunger in Portland.

Machar is a 1-2 year commitment. Participants take Jewish adult education classes every Tuesday night for about 2 hours during the school year in addition to meeting for a Sunday brunch once a month to collaborate on projects and learn leadership skills. Each participant is expected to plan and execute one event, program, or project to get other young people involved in Jewish life. What you do is up to you. Projects can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. There are many kinds of leadership and we will help you find a style that works for you - don't worry if you have no event planning experience, are scared of public speaking, or don't think of yourself as a leader in a traditional way.

Participants enjoy the friendships they form through the program and the joy of building community.
